Thursday Rehearsals

Hi All,

I already need to revise the schedule, but it won't affect most of you.  I have a new voice student on Thursday evenings until 7:30 in Layton, so please note:

ALL THURSDAY EVENING REHEARSALS WILL BE 8:00-9:00 AND WILL ONLY BE FOR CHRIS, WINDY, AND MIRANDA.

THANKS.

Costume Fittings

Hello to the cast of Les Miserables,

I need to have each of you set up a costume fitting with me.  It will take 45 min to an hour for each of you.  I was trying to avoid this and do the costume fittings in groups, but it's just too confusing.  I would like to start any time after December 15.  I should have been able to meet with Sherry at the Costume Castle by then and I will pull what I think will work from her collection.  My schedule is crazy, but here are the days and times I am available for you to come for a costume fitting.

Monday-After 7:00
Tuesday-All day until 6:30
Wednesday-All day until 4:00
Thursday-8:30 on
Friday-7:00 on except on days when I have a rehearsal scheduled
Saturday-8:30-10:00
Sunday-After 1:00

Thanks.  Jill

Les Mis rehearsals, etc.

Hi to all.  I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving.
I am cancelling the morning rehearsal on Saturday because so many of the actors will be missing.  But we will still have the afternoon rehearsal.

The news of the day is that I made the decision to pay the money to rent the music for Les Miserables from The MT Pit.  They are a company that records the music from the score with all of the correct instrumentation.  The quality is much more professional than what I was able to piece together from the various karaoke versions available.  I think it was a good choice but it is a little different than what we have been using at rehearsal.  It isn't different enough to make it too difficult to adjust.  I have 10 copies of the rehearsal cds and I will provide all of the lead characters with a copy.  I will need a deposit of $25.00 (it could be a check that I will hold) that will be refunded when the cds are returned to me.  Do not make copies!

I have really been pleased with all of you cast members who don't have lead roles.  You are doing a really good job of learning your parts, participating enthusiastically and following directions.  Thank you.

But, I have been really disappointed with the attendance at the scene work rehearsals.  Last week's rehearsal required 5 singers for the solos and not one of them came to rehearsal.  The sad part was that some of the ensemble cast did show up and had nothing to do.

The following parts are extrememly important and it is absolutely necessary for these characters to show up to rehearsal!!!!!  They are in almost every scene in act II and ABC Cafe, People's song, Attack on Rue Plumet, and the Beggars.   We haven't finished these scenes because these characters have not been at rehearsal.
Joly, Grantiere, Feuilly, Comberferre, Coufeyrac and the gang at Attack on Rue Plumet
We can go no further in this show until these characters know their parts and their blocking.

Thanks.  See you tomorrow afternoon.  Jill

9.16.13 thru 11.9.13 ~ Les Miserables Rehearsal Schedule

Hello, Cast,
I am attaching (below) the Les Miserables schedule through November 9. I have decided to spend most of the Tuesday and Saturday morning rehearsals working out the vocal parts.  We will work on the characterizations and acting as well, but do most of the blocking on Saturday afternoons.  I will also, in the next week, get a cd to you with the entire show on it so you can learn the recititive parts.  The recititive's are all of the parts in between the songs that tell the story.  All of those parts are sung and need to be coordinated with the accompaniment.  I didn't schedule any other scene work, except on one Thursday.  If we are unable to get the vocals learned at the Tuesday or Saturday morning rehearsals I will schedule a scene work rehearsal on Thursday evening or Friday afternoon.  We'll see how it goes.  I may find that we can't move this quickly and need to change the schedule, but I'm counting on you to do your homework, learn your parts as much as you can before you come to rehearsal.  Please let me know if you have a conflict with any of these rehearsals.  Please try not to miss the Tuesday evening or Saturday morning rehearsals if possible.

Les Miserables Audition and Rehearsal Update

Hi, Everyone.  I want to let everyone know that the auditions went really well, and you all did great!  I hope you are excited about doing this show, and whether you get a lead part or not there are a lot of other parts and ensemble numbers that will keep you busy and having fun.  My big concern, regarding call backs, are the boys parts and I hope all of you boys will be able to make it back here at 7:00 tonight.  There are so many boy parts and I need to hear all of you so I can tell which parts you will sing best.

Girls, I only called a couple of girls back.  As usual, there are a lot of girls trying for the same roles.  I do have to make some hard decisions but I think I have the information I need.

I hope to have this show cast by late tonight.

Vocal rehearsal tomorrow 10:30-12:00 will be for "Prologue" (chain gang) through "What have I done" I will need the following characters:
Chain gang
3 constibles
Farmer
Labourer
Bishop
Jean Valjean
Javert

Full Cast rehearsal:  1:00-4:00
Prologue and end of the Day

I will get the schedule through October to you before Monday.

Thanks.  Jill

Audition Details

Hi, All, The auditions for Les Miserables are this week.  The sign-up information is below.  Everyone needs to audition, and I will expect everyone to sing a song (or part of a song) from the show.  If you are auditioning for a specific role you need to sing a song by that character.  I am keeping Friday open for call-backs, unless it's the only day you can schedule an auditon.  There will be no rehearsal this Tuesday (tomorrow).  I will have the show cast Friday night and we will be ready to go on Saturday.  The full-cast rehearsal on Saturday will be 1:00-4:00
Saturday 10:30-12:00 will require Jean Valjean, Javert, the Farmer, the laborer and the Bishop and we will do the Prologue.
Thanks.  See you at the auditions.

**Les Mis Update**

Hi, All,

Yesterday we got our contract for Les Miserables.  It was a very exciting day for me because Music Theater International, the company who hold the rights to Les Mis, denied our application.  Our representative from MTI explained that there is freeze in Utah on any performances of Les Miserables until 2015.  Then, there will be a national freeze because there will be a Broadway tour.  Apparently, there are three professional companies with the rights to Les Miserables in Utah in 2014.  I sent a convincing appeal and we were granted the contract.  But, we can only do 4 performances.  I really wanted to do 8, but we are lucky to be able to do any.

So, this is our moment.  We have an opportunity to do one of the greatest musical productions ever and we need to make it the greatest performance ever.  And, the thing is WE CAN!!!!  We have an amazing amount of talent already and hope to recruit more to fill the many roles.

We are doing the student version of Les Miserables which is cleaned up from the original and shorter.  But, it has all of the songs.  We need to stick to the script (there will be a few changes I will request from MTI to make it acceptable for children actors).

I hope most of you are planning to join us on this challenging journey.

Rehearsals begin September 3, 2013  7:00-8:30 at Performance Dance 201 E 2150 N  Layton (Off Antelope and Fort Lane)
Saturday September 7-Parent Meeting  10:30-12:00 at Performance Dance
Saturday September 7-Full Cast rehearsal 1:00-4:00
***We will begin rehearsing ensemble numbers, introduce the cast to the show and it's characters, give out scripts and CDs during the first couple of weeks.  Then we will set up appointments for auditions for the specific roles.  The auditions are held in Syracuse at 2491 S 1150 W.

Alumni:  We would love to have you join us for the People Sing number in the middle and the end of the show.  The more of you we have the more of an impact it will have.  There won't be much rehearsal time required, but I think it will be an amazing experience.

If you have any questions please email me or call  (801) 510-8414
Thanks.  I am looking forward to seeing you on the 3rd.
Jill

Bound for Broadway

Hi, All,
I realize that some of you are on several group listings for JAKS so you get more than one of the same email.  In the next few weeks we will try to compile a different list for information like this, so everyone only receives one.

Please look over the attached flier-I realize there is some duplicated information on it-but let me know if you or your child would be interested in a program like this.  Many of you aren't doing our next JAKS shows but are still interested in musical theater.  This might be a fun way to improve your skills or your childs skills.  And, of course if you are doing our next shows you would still be welcome.

If you would consider doing this program, or have other ideas about classes of this sort, please let me know.  We would like to begin as soon as possible, if there is enough interest.

Thanks.   Jill

Les Miserables-Please read this

Hi, All,

I realize that Les Miserables is a very dark and depressing show.  And, if you have concerns about your children doing this, I hope this helps dispell some of them.

Les Miserables is 3 hours.  We, obviously cannot do that.  I have requested the perusal copy of the school version and the original so I can compare them.  I think the school version will be minus the profanity, and the vulgarity and unnecessary violence.  Also, the school version is shorter.  We want our shows to be only two hours.

But, I will handle the show so that it portrays the poverty, and some of the desperation driving the revolution.  But, although we need the "Lovely Ladie's" scene, our version will not be graphic or include the adult lyrics.  And, the Master of the House scene will also be cleaned up.  I really hope the student version handles all of these things.  If not, I will send in my changes to MTI.

For the younger kids this show will be about the singing, the blocking, and choreography (although there are no real dances).  It will be a hard show, but will be an amazing production.

I hope this will make it easier to let your children participate.

Thanks.  Jill
